Jaisalmer Desert Getaway

Day 1 · Thu, Dec 31
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Arrival in Jaisalmer

  1. Jaisalmer Railway Station / Airport transfer — Jaisalmer; allow ~45–60 minutes from arrival, including baggage and hotel check-in logistics.
  2. Jaisalmer Fort — Fort area; explore the living golden fortress, palace courtyards, and lanes, allowing ~2 hours.
  3. Gadisar Lake — Near the fort; enjoy a relaxed lakeside walk and boat-view scenery, ~45 minutes.
  4. The Trio — Near Jaisalmer Fort; have a rooftop Rajasthani dinner with fort views, approximately ₹800–1,500 per person, ~1.5 hours.
  5. Sam Sand Dunes — Sam; take a pre-arranged jeep or camel excursion and sunset experience, allowing ~3–4 hours including the drive each way. Confirm transport and desert-camp arrangements in advance for the New Year period.

Arrival and Check-in

Allow 45–60 minutes after landing or leaving Jaisalmer Railway Station for baggage, the transfer into town, and hotel check-in formalities. A prepaid hotel pickup or app-based taxi is the easiest option; local auto-rickshaws are useful for short hops but may not accommodate three people and luggage comfortably. Keep the afternoon flexible, as New Year’s Eve traffic and fully booked hotels can slow arrivals.

Once settled, head to Jaisalmer Fort, a short auto-rickshaw ride or walk from many central hotels. Spend about two hours exploring the living fortress: wander the narrow lanes, see the palace courtyards, and pause at the ramparts for views across the old city. The fort is open through the day, but arrive before dusk for better light and cooler temperatures. Wear shoes with grip—the sandstone lanes are uneven—and be mindful that residents, temples, and homes are woven into the fort itself.

Sunset, Dinner, and the Desert

Continue to Gadisar Lake for around 45 minutes of easy lakeside wandering and boat-view scenery. It is close enough to reach by auto-rickshaw from the fort, usually taking 10–15 minutes depending on traffic. Boat rides, if operating, are paid separately and weather- and crowd-dependent; the walk is worthwhile even without one. Then return toward Jaisalmer Fort for dinner at The Trio, where the rooftop setting gives you a classic view of the illuminated fort. Allow roughly 1½ hours and budget ₹800–1,500 per person; reserve ahead, especially for New Year’s Eve, and request an outdoor table if the weather is comfortable.

After dinner, travel to Sam Sand Dunes only with a pre-arranged jeep or camel operator, allowing 3–4 hours overall for the drive, sunset excursion, and return. Sam is roughly 40–45 km from Jaisalmer, and the road is dark and sparsely serviced after sunset, so do not rely on finding a vehicle at the last minute. Confirm in advance whether your booking includes round-trip transport, camel or jeep time, desert-camp access, dinner, and New Year’s Eve arrangements; December nights are cold, so bring a warm layer, closed shoes, and water. If you are staying overnight at a camp, check-in timing and return transport to Jaisalmer must be settled before departure.
