Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.
Arrive in Sasan Gir and allow about an hour to reach your lodge, complete check-in, and settle in. Most stays are clustered around Sasan Gir village and the forest reception area; local auto-rickshaws are limited, so arrange a hotel pickup in advance if you are arriving by train or bus. Use this time to reconfirm your pre-booked Gir National Park permit, safari vehicle, reporting point, and identification requirements—an online permit alone does not guarantee a seat unless the vehicle booking is also in place.
Head to the assigned Gir National Park safari gate for your available late-afternoon jeep safari. Keep roughly 30–45 minutes for reporting, document checks, and vehicle allocation, then expect around three hours inside the forest. The best sightings are never guaranteed, but the dry deciduous landscape is excellent for watching chital, nilgai, sambar, langurs, crocodiles, and—if you are lucky—an Asiatic lion. Wear muted clothing, carry water and binoculars, and follow the guide’s instructions rather than asking the driver to hurry between sightings. Safari permits and vehicle fees vary by zone and season, so treat the official booking portal or your lodge’s confirmation as authoritative; do not rely on walk-in availability.
If the main safari slot is unavailable or finishes early, use the evening for the Lion Safari Park, a compact managed wildlife experience near Sasan Gir. Confirm its operating status and same-day entry before going, as opening arrangements and availability can change; allow 1–1½ hours and expect a more controlled experience than the forest jeep safari. Finish with dinner in the Sasan Gir market area, choosing a simple Gujarati or Kathiawadi restaurant for thali, bajra rotla, sev tameta, ringan no olo, and buttermilk. Budget approximately ₹250–₹600 per person, and eat fairly early—many local establishments wind down by about 9:30–10:00 PM.
Start early for the Gir Interpretation Zone, Devalia, allowing roughly 2–3 hours for the guided bus or jeep circuit, photography, and entry formalities. This is a good final wildlife experience because sightings are generally more predictable than in the open forest, though it is still not guaranteed. Reserve the required entry slot through the official Gir Forest booking system or have your lodge confirm the process; carry the booking ID and arrive at least 30 minutes early. Devalia is about 12 km from Sasan Gir—a pre-arranged lodge vehicle or auto-rickshaw is the most practical option, with limited local transport once you are away from the village.
After returning, have a simple regional breakfast at your hotel or a nearby local eatery in Sasan Gir, budgeting ₹150–₹350 per person and about 45 minutes. Ask for staples such as thepla, poha, fafda, or tea, and keep the meal reasonably light before the forest drive. Then continue toward Kankai Mata Temple, usually reached by a locally arranged vehicle; access through the forest region can depend on route permissions, current forest conditions, and operating hours, so confirm with the forest reception or your accommodation before setting out. Allow 1–1½ hours for the drive and visit, and dress modestly while keeping voices low around the temple and surrounding forest.
Return to Sasan Gir village for an unhurried walk through the local market and handicraft stalls. Look for packaged Gir-region snacks, spices, embroidered textiles, beadwork, and small wooden or fabric souvenirs; bargaining is generally modest, especially with handmade goods. Shops may close for part of the afternoon, so treat this as a flexible 45-minute stop rather than a tightly timed shopping appointment. Finish with lunch at a Kathiawadi restaurant near Sasan Gir, ordering a thali or dishes such as sev tameta, ringan bateta, bajra rotla, kadhi, and chaas. Expect approximately ₹250–₹600 per person, and arrange your onward vehicle before sitting down—taxis and autos can be sparse after the midday rush.
