Nashville to Denver One-Way Road Trip

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Denver, CO

Drive from Nashville to Denver

  1. Nashville–Denver road journey — I-40 W → I-35 N → I-70 W; depart around 6:00 AM for approximately 20–22 hours of driving, plus fuel, meal, and rest stops. This route requires at least one overnight stop—practically Oklahoma City or Wichita—so arriving in Denver the same day is not realistic; plan parking and lodging before departure.

  2. Roadside breakfast stop — near Memphis or Jackson, TN; take ~45 minutes for breakfast and coffee after the first driving stretch.

  3. Roadside lunch stop — near Oklahoma City, OK; allow ~1 hour for lunch, fuel, and a driver change.

  4. Overnight hotel near I-35/I-40 — Oklahoma City area; stop after roughly 9–10 hours of driving and rest overnight before continuing west.

Early Morning — Nashville to the Road

This day begins with the Nashville–Denver road journey, but Denver is not a same-day drive: the I-40 W → I-35 N → I-70 W route is roughly 20–22 hours behind the wheel before fuel, meals, driver changes, and rest. Leave Nashville around 6:00 AM, with the car packed and the first fuel stop planned before entering the longer rural stretches. Expect a full day on the road, changing scenery from Tennessee farmland through Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most importantly, reserve the overnight stay before departure; continuing after 9–10 hours of driving is not a safe plan. Budget approximately $150–$250 for fuel, depending on the vehicle, plus meals and lodging.

Breakfast — Near Memphis or Jackson

After the first substantial driving stretch, stop for about 45 minutes near Memphis or Jackson, Tennessee, rather than trying to push through tired. A practical option is Waffle House near the interstate for quick coffee, breakfast, and easy parking; locations vary, so choose one immediately along the route rather than detouring into town. Allow extra time for morning traffic around Memphis, and keep the stop focused: coffee, food, restroom, and a brief driver change before getting back onto I-40 W.

Midday — Oklahoma City Area

Continue west toward Oklahoma City, where the route becomes a good point for a longer break. Plan roughly an hour for lunch, fuel, and a driver change, ideally at a travel plaza or restaurant close to the I-40/I-35 interchange so you do not lose time crossing the city. Braum’s is a useful road-trip stop in Oklahoma for an inexpensive burger or sandwich, fuel at nearby stations, and fast service; a typical lunch with a drink runs about $10–$18 per person. Check traffic before entering Oklahoma City, especially around the I-35/I-40 interchange, and leave enough fuel margin for the final approach to the hotel.

Evening — Overnight Near I-35/I-40

After approximately 9–10 hours of driving, stop at an Oklahoma City-area hotel near I-35/I-40 rather than attempting the remaining distance to Denver. Choose a property with on-site parking, late check-in, and easy interstate access; airport-area or southeast Oklahoma City hotels are often more convenient than downtown for this overnight. Typical midrange rates are about $100–$180 before tax, but confirm the parking policy and cancellation terms. The next morning, allow another full driving day for the western leg via I-70 W, with fuel and rest breaks through western Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, and Colorado; arriving in Denver the same day as departure would require an unsafe, impractical driving schedule.
