Lhasa to Beijing China Itinerary

Day 1 · Thu, Sep 2
Lhasa, China

Arrival in Lhasa

  1. Lhasa Gonggar Airport → central Lhasa transfer — Airport to Lhasa; allow ~2–3 hours door-to-door, including baggage, permits, and the ~60 km road transfer. Depart after arrival with a pre-arranged vehicle; keep the afternoon light for acclimatization.
  2. Jokhang Temple — Barkhor, ~1.5 hours in the late afternoon; Tibet’s most revered temple, subject to identity checks and advance booking/permit arrangements.
  3. Barkhor Street — Old City, ~45 minutes; walk the kora and browse traditional handicrafts around the Jokhang.
  4. Tibetan dinner near Barkhor — Old City, ~1 hour; choose a well-reviewed Tibetan restaurant for momos, thukpa, and butter tea, approximately ¥60–120 per person.
  5. Potala Palace exterior viewpoint — Lhasa city center, ~45 minutes at sunset; enjoy the classic illuminated view without committing to strenuous interior sightseeing on arrival day.

Arrival and Acclimatization

After landing at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, allow roughly 2–3 hours door-to-door to reach central Lhasa. The airport sits about 60 km away, and baggage collection, identity or permit checks, altitude, and the road transfer can all take longer than expected. Arrange a pre-booked hotel vehicle or licensed driver rather than relying on finding transport on arrival; the airport expressway normally takes about 1–1½ hours in light traffic. Keep the first afternoon deliberately slow, drink water, avoid alcohol, and rest if you develop a headache or nausea.

In the late afternoon, visit Jokhang Temple in Barkhor for about 1½ hours, then take an easy 45-minute walk around Barkhor Street. This is the best introduction to Lhasa’s old city: follow the pilgrims’ clockwise kora, browse small shops selling prayer beads and handicrafts, and walk gently rather than treating it as a workout. Jokhang Temple requires identity checks and usually advance reservation or permit arrangements through your tour operator; confirm the 2027 entry procedure before arrival. Expect security screening, and carry your passport or required travel documents.

Dinner and Sunset

Have dinner at a well-reviewed Tibetan restaurant near Barkhor, choosing local staples such as momos, thukpa, tsampa, and sweet or salty butter tea; budget approximately ¥60–120 per person. Ask your hotel or guide to recommend a currently operating dining room, since restaurant names and opening hours change. Afterward, take a short taxi ride or pre-arranged vehicle to a Potala Palace exterior viewpoint for around 45 minutes at sunset. The classic illuminated view is rewarding without the stairs and altitude demands of an interior visit. Check sunset timing locally and avoid lingering if you feel unwell; return to your hotel early for a full night’s acclimatization.

Day 2 · Fri, Sep 3
Beijing, China

Beijing exploration

Getting there from Lhasa, China
Flight, preferably a direct morning flight from Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA) to Beijing Capital (PEK), usually operated by Air China or Tibet Airlines. Allow about 4–5 hours in the air and 7–9 hours door-to-door; approximately ¥1,500–3,500 one-way. Book via Trip.com or the airline directly. Depart around 06:00–07:00; this is already very tight for the planned Beijing activities, so verify the 2027 schedule and reserve airport transport the night before.
Overnight train Z22 from Lhasa to Beijing West via the Qinghai–Tibet Railway: about 40–41 hours and approximately ¥1,200–1,500 for a hard/soft sleeper. Book through 12306.cn or Trip.com, but it will not arrive on day 2.
  1. Beijing Capital International Airport → central Beijing transfer — Airport Express or pre-arranged taxi to central Beijing; allow ~1.5–2.5 hours door-to-door, including airport access, security, and city transfer. This requires an early flight from Lhasa and a confirmed schedule; the route is extremely tight if traveling the same day.
  2. Temple of Heaven — Dongcheng, ~1.5 hours; explore the monumental imperial altar and lively morning park culture.
  3. Qianmen Street — Dongcheng, ~1 hour; stroll the historic commercial district and traditional storefronts.
  4. Peking duck lunch at Quanjude Qianmen — Qianmen, ~1.5 hours; a classic Beijing meal, approximately ¥180–350 per person depending on dishes.
  5. Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City — Dongcheng, ~3 hours; Beijing’s marquee imperial sights, requiring advance real-name reservations and timed entry, with passport checks.
  6. Beijing → Lhasa return journey — From Beijing airport to Lhasa; depart for the airport ~3 hours before the flight, allowing ~5–7 hours total door-to-door depending on flight and transfers. A second Beijing night is strongly recommended unless a suitable late flight and all Forbidden City reservations are confirmed.

Arrival and Temple of Heaven

This is an exceptionally tight same-day plan. A direct early flight from Lhasa Gonggar Airport must arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport early enough to clear baggage and airport formalities, then allow roughly 1.5–2.5 hours door-to-door into the city. The Airport Express is usually quickest when your destination is near the subway network; a pre-arranged taxi is simpler with luggage but vulnerable to Beijing traffic. If the 2027 flight schedule does not put you downtown by late morning, add a night in Beijing rather than trying to force the full program.

From central Beijing, take the subway or a short taxi to Temple of Heaven for about 1.5 hours. The park is at its most local in the morning, when residents gather for tai chi, dancing, singing, and games; the main imperial buildings and enclosed attractions generally require a separate ticket, commonly around ¥35–40 combined, while the park itself is inexpensive. Entry rules and hours can vary by season, so check the official reservation system close to travel and carry the passport used for booking.

Qianmen and Lunch

Walk or take a brief taxi north toward Qianmen Street, allowing about an hour to browse the restored storefronts and hutong lanes nearby. It is tourist-oriented, but the side alleys are more atmospheric than the central pedestrian strip. Continue to Quanjude Qianmen for Peking duck; allow 1–1.5 hours and expect roughly ¥180–350 per person depending on the duck size, dishes, and drinks. A reservation is sensible, particularly on a Friday, and service can be slower than the meal’s simple appearance suggests.

Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City

After lunch, proceed through the required security access for Tiananmen Square, then to the Forbidden City. Together, allow at least three hours, including queues and the long walk through the palace complex. Both the square area and palace museum involve identity checks; the Forbidden City requires an advance real-name reservation, normally released through its official booking channels, and passport details must match exactly. Do not rely on buying a ticket on arrival. The museum is commonly closed on Mondays, but verify the 2027 calendar, opening hours, and available timed slot before committing to the flight.

For the return to Lhasa, leave central Beijing about three hours before the scheduled flight, with an additional margin after such a demanding day. A taxi or pre-arranged car is safest late in the evening; Beijing Capital International Airport is connected by Airport Express, but the transfer still involves station access, check-in, security, and a long terminal walk. In practical terms, completing all these sights and catching a same-day flight requires a very early arrival and a late departure; a second Beijing night is strongly recommended unless every reservation and flight time is confirmed.
