Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.
Start early from Brisbane for the drive north on the Bruce Highway to Gladstone. Allow roughly 6–7 hours behind the wheel, but budget a full door-to-door day once you include traffic leaving Brisbane, fuel, meal and rest stops, highway roadworks, and the possibility of delays. Leaving around 6:00–7:00 am is sensible; fill up before departure and share the driving if possible. Useful breaks are the service areas around Caboolture, Gympie, and Rockhampton, though it is worth checking live traffic and roadworks before setting off. Keep water and snacks in the car, and avoid treating the estimated driving time as a guaranteed arrival time.
After checking into your Gladstone accommodation—confirm that on-site parking is available—head to The Coffee Emporium in Gladstone CBD for about 45 minutes. It is a good chance to stretch your legs, have coffee, and settle into the slower pace of the harbour city; check its trading hours before leaving Brisbane, as late-day service can vary. From the CBD, drive or walk onward to Gladstone Marina, allowing about an hour for an easy waterfront stroll and views over the boats. The marina is particularly pleasant in the late afternoon light, and the short transfer between the two stops makes this a low-effort way to finish a long driving day.
Continue to The Dock at East Shores, allowing around 10 minutes by car from the marina, or a little longer on foot depending on your exact starting point. Spend roughly 1½ hours exploring the waterfront paths before settling in for dinner. Allow about A$25–45 per person for a main meal and drinks, and check the venue’s current trading hours before departure because evening availability can change outside peak periods. The East Shores precinct is compact and relaxed, so there is no need to rush—take a short walk along the harbour after eating, then return to your accommodation for an early night.
Do not drive back to Brisbane after dinner. Have breakfast in Gladstone, then depart in the morning via the Bruce Highway for another approximately 6–7 hours of driving, plus breaks and traffic. Plan fuel and rest stops rather than attempting the return continuously; arriving in Brisbane in the afternoon is much safer and more comfortable than making the round trip on the same day.
