Three-Day Pondicherry Itinerary for Shoestring Budget Travellers in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Auroville
    11 minutes (6.2 km) from Pondicherry Bus Station

    Morning: Explore the sustainable community of Auroville, founded in 1968. Visit the Matrimandir, a golden globe meditation center, and take a walk in the peaceful forest.
    Afternoon: Head to the Auroville Beach and relax in the cool breeze. Enjoy some street food from the local vendors and shop for souvenirs at the nearby shops.
    Evening: Watch the sunset at Serenity Beach and enjoy some seafood at the nearby restaurants.

  2. Day 2: Paradise Beach & Promenade Beach
    19 minutes (8.5 km) from Auroville

    Morning: Take a ferry ride to reach the isolated Paradise Beach, one of the cleanest beaches in Pondicherry. Enjoy swimming in the blue-green waters and relax under the sun.
    Afternoon: Head to Promenade Beach, also known as the Rock Beach and enjoy the view of the Bay of Bengal. Rent a bicycle or take a stroll in the lively French town and visit the War Memorial, Gandhi statue and the Old Lighthouse.
    Evening: Attend the Light House Dance Festival held annually in August-September at the Old Lighthouse.

  3. Day 3: Sri Aurobindo Ashram & Botanical Garden
    9 minutes (2.9 km) from Promenade Beach

    Morning: Visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926, and learn about the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Visit the bookshop and handmade paper factory.
    Afternoon: Head to the Botanical Garden, spread over 22-acres, and stroll around the vibrant greenery. Visit the musical fountain and the aquarium.
    Evening: Attend a live performance at the Kala Kendra, an art center within the Ashram premises.

Recommendations

If you have more time, explore the Gingee Fort, popularly known as the "Troy of the East". You can also take a day trip to Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that has ancient stone carved temples and monuments.
