5-Day Adventure in Meghalaya in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Trek to the Living Root Bridges in Cherrapunjee

    Start your adventure with a trek to the famous Living Root Bridges in Cherrapunjee. After a 2-hour drive from Shillong, you’ll trek through the lush forest of Meghalaya, crossing streams and small villages. Reach the Living Root Bridges, which are made from the roots of trees and are a unique wonder of nature. Enjoy a picnic lunch here. Head back to Shillong in the evening.

  2. Day 2: Caving in Krem Mawmluh
    20 minutes (9.6 km) from Shillong

    Start your day with a 1-hour drive from Shillong to Krem Mawmluh. This cave system is the fourth longest cave in the Indian subcontinent and is perfect for adventurous travelers. Spend the morning exploring the caves with a guide. After lunch, visit the Mawjymbuin Cave, a natural cave with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Return to Shillong in the evening.

  3. Day 3: Trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat Village
    2 hours 20 minutes (62.4 km) from Shillong

    Depart early morning for a 3-hour drive from Shillong to Tyrna village. Start your trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village. This bridge is unique and is made from two levels of living roots that have been intertwined. Enjoy a picnic lunch here and take a dip in the natural pool beneath the bridge. Return to Tyrna village and drive back to Shillong.

  4. Day 4: Kayaking on Umiam Lake

Spend the morning kayaking and enjoying the stunning views. After lunch, visit the Lum Nehru Park and the Shillong Peak for some breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Return to Shillong in the evening.

  5. Day 5: Rock Climbing and Rappelling in Sohra
    2 hours 10 minutes (54.9 km) from Shillong

    Depart early morning for a 2-hour drive from Shillong to Sohra. Visit the Nohkalikai Falls, which is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Afterward, go rock climbing and rappelling at the Sohra Climbing and Adventure Institute. The institute offers courses for all levels of climbers and rappellers. Afterward, return to Shillong in the evening.

Recommendations

Don't miss out on the stunning views of the Dawki River and the Umngot River, which are located close to Cherrapunjee and offer great activities like boating and fishing. You can also visit the Mawphlang Sacred Forest, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is only an hour's drive from Shillong. If you have time, you can also visit the Balpakram National Park, which is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, and bears.
