4-Day Adventure Itinerary for Zanskar Valley in July 2023

1. Day 1: Leh to Kargil
   6 hours (220 km) from Leh

   Start early from Leh and drive towards Kargil. A few kilometres from Leh, you will reach Magnetic Hill, a natural phenomenon that defies gravity. Spend some time here and move ahead to explore the beautiful confluence of Indus and Zanskar rivers. Further, you can visit the Lamayuru Monastery, which dates back to the 11th century. After lunch, you can drive to the Kargil War Memorial and pay homage to the brave soldiers of the Indian Army. Reach Kargil by early evening and enjoy a local dinner.

2. Day 2: Kargil to Padum
   6 hours (240 km) from Kargil

   Post breakfast, start the drive towards Padum. En route, you can visit the famous Rangdum Monastery and take a short trek to the isolated Kanji village, known for its apricot orchards. After lunch, visit the Zongkhul Monastery, which is nestled in a cave and is accessible only by foot. Head towards Padum, the administrative centre of Zanskar valley and explore the local market in the evening.

3. Day 3: Padum to Zongkhul Monastery
   5 hours (58 km) from Padum

   Start early in the morning and drive towards the Zongkhul Monastery, one of the most remote monasteries in Zanskar valley. The trek to the monastery is a moderate-level trek that goes through the Zongkhul gorge. The monastery is perched at an altitude of 3,800 metres and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Spend some time here and return to Padum by evening.

4. Day 4: Padum to Leh
   10 hours (464 km) from Padum

   Start early and head back to Leh. En route, you can visit the Bardan Monastery, famous for its prayer wheel and Thongde Monastery, which is known for its ancient frescoes. Reach Leh by late evening and spend some time exploring the local markets and cafes.

If you are an adventure enthusiast, you can opt for river rafting in the Zanskar river, which is a thrilling experience. You can also take a trek to the Phuktal Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Zanskar valley. Another side trip that you can consider is a visit to the Nubra valley, which is home to the beautiful sand dunes and the double-humped Bactrian camels.
