Another great side trip is to visit the nearby town of Banner Elk, which has a charming downtown area with shops and restaurants. To maximize your fun, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks for the hike. Also, check the weather forecast before you go and dress in layers.
