Darjeeling, Gangtok, Sikkim: 6-Day Itinerary in October 2023

  1. Day 1: Darjeeling
    1 hour 45 minutes (35 miles) from Bagdogra Airport

    In the morning, visit Tiger Hill to see the sunrise over Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. In the afternoon, take a ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the "Toy Train", which runs on a 2-feet narrow gauge track and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening, visit the Japanese Peace Pagoda, a Buddhist temple with beautiful views of the town.

  2. Day 2: Gangtok
    3 hours (67 miles) from Darjeeling

    In the morning, visit the Rumtek Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery with stunning architecture. In the afternoon, explore the Gangtok city center and visit the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, which has a museum and research center on Tibetan history and culture. In the evening, take a stroll in the Ridge Park, which has a beautiful flower garden and views of the Himalayas.

  3. Day 3: Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir
    2 hours (36 miles) from Gangtok

    In the morning, drive to Tsomgo Lake, a glacial lake at an altitude of 12,313 feet. In the afternoon, visit Baba Mandir, a temple dedicated to an Indian army soldier who died near the Nathu La Pass. In the evening, return to Gangtok and explore the MG Marg, a pedestrian street with shops and restaurants.

  4. Day 4: Pelling
    5 hours (73 miles) from Gangtok

    In the morning, drive to Pelling and visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Sikkim. In the afternoon, visit the Khecheopalri Lake, a sacred lake surrounded by dense forests. In the evening, take a walk in the Rabdentse Ruins, the second capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim.

  5. Day 5: Yuksom
    1 hour 30 minutes (36 miles) from Pelling

    In the morning, drive to Yuksom and visit the Dubdi Monastery, the first monastery established in Sikkim and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon, hike to the Kanchenjunga Falls, a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. In the evening, visit the Norbugang Park, the site of the first Sikkimese King's coronation.

  6. Day 6: Departure
    5 hours (127 miles) from Yuksom to Bagdogra Airport

    In the morning, check out from the hotel and drive to Bagdogra Airport for departure.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling. You can also take a day trip to the Nathu La Pass, which connects India and Tibet and requires a permit. Another option is to visit the Ravangla Buddha Park and the Temi Tea Garden in South Sikkim. To maximize your fun, try the local cuisine, which includes momos, thukpa, and chhang. Lastly, make sure to check the weather conditions and road closures before planning your itinerary.
