Meghalaya: 5-Day Itinerary in October 2023

  1. Day 1: Shillong
    30 minutes (10.2 miles) from Shillong Airport

    Start your journey in Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. In the morning, visit the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures to learn about the various tribes and their traditions. Head to the Laitlum Canyons for a scenic view and trek to soak in the beauty of the valley. In the evening, visit the iconic Elephant Falls which is lit up beautifully at night.

  2. Day 2: Cherrapunjee
    1 hour 20 minutes (34.5 miles) from Shillong

    Start your day early and head to Cherrapunjee, also known as "the wettest place on earth". Visit the Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village. Explore the Krem Mawmluh Cave, one of the longest caves in the Indian subcontinent. In the evening, return to Shillong.

  3. Day 3: Mawlynnong
    2 hours 20 minutes (62.7 miles) from Shillong

    Head to Mawlynnong, named the "Cleanest Village in Asia". Take a walk around the village and see the unique living root bridges. Visit the Balancing Rock and experience the Sky View, a bamboo watchtower with a panoramic view of the village. In the evening, head to Dawki for a boat ride in the crystal clear waters of Umngot River.

  4. Day 4: Nongkhnum Island
    2 hours 30 minutes (48.7 miles) from Shillong

    Visit the Nongkhnum Island, the largest river island in Meghalaya. Trek to the top of the island for a view of the Brahmaputra River. Take a dip in the natural swimming pool on the island. In the evening, return to Shillong.

  5. Day 5: Mawsynram
    1 hour 40 minutes (34.5 miles) from Shillong

    End your trip by visiting Mawsynram, the wettest place on earth. Visit the Mawsmai Cave, a well-lit limestone cave. Visit the Mawsynram Waterfall, a beautiful waterfall surrounded by greenery. Take a walk around the village and witness the unique culture of the Khasi tribe. In the evening, return to Shillong for your final night in Meghalaya.

Apart from the above itinerary, you can also consider visiting the Shnongpdeng village for river activities, Umiam Lake for water sports, and the Lalong Park for a peaceful evening stroll. You can also take a side trip to Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeast, for a day trip. To maximize your fun, make sure to try the local cuisine, such as Jadoh, Dohneiiong, and Tungrymbai. Lastly, make sure to carry comfortable shoes, warm clothes, and an umbrella or raincoat as Meghalaya is known for its unpredictable weather.
