Family-Friendly Itinerary for Tiruvannamalai in June 2023

  1. 9:00AM: Arunachalesvara Temple
    Located in the heart of the city

    Visit one of the largest and oldest temples in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Marvel at the stunning Dravidian architecture and intricate carvings on the walls. The temple is open from 5:30AM to 12:30PM and from 3:30PM to 9:30PM.

  2. 11:00AM: Ramana Ashram
    5 minutes (0.3 miles) from Arunachalesvara Temple

    Experience the peaceful atmosphere of the ashram where the great sage Ramana Maharshi lived. Visit the samadhi shrine and take a stroll in the beautiful gardens. The ashram is open from 8:00AM to 12:00PM and from 2:00PM to 6:00PM.

  3. 1:00PM: Tiruvannamalai Girivalam
    20 minutes (5.5 miles) from Ramana Ashram

    Take a spiritual walk around the sacred hill of Arunachala. The path is 14 kilometers long and takes around 3-4 hours to complete. Enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and meditate at the various shrines along the way.

  4. 5:00PM: Virupaksha Cave
    10 minutes (2.5 miles) from Girivalam path

    Visit the cave where Ramana Maharshi spent several years in silence. The cave is located on the hillside and offers breathtaking views of the valley below. Spend some time in quiet contemplation and reflection. The cave is open from 8:00AM to 6:00PM.

  5. 7:00PM: Annamalaiyar Temple
    15 minutes (3.2 miles) from Virupaksha Cave

    End your day with a visit to another important temple in Tiruvannamalai. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is famous for its grand gopurams and massive inner courtyard. The temple is open from 5:30AM to 12:30PM and from 3:30PM to 9:30PM.

Recommendations

If you have time, you can also visit the Sathanur Dam and Lake, which is around 20 kilometers from Tiruvannamalai. The dam offers stunning views and is a popular picnic spot for locals. You can also try some of the local cuisine, such as idli, dosa, and vada, at the many street food stalls in the city. Make sure to carry plenty of water and wear comfortable shoes for the Girivalam walk.

For side trips, you can visit the nearby towns of Gingee and Viluppuram, which are known for their historic forts and temples. You can also plan a weekend trip to Pondicherry, which is around 100 kilometers from Tiruvannamalai. The former French colony offers a unique blend of Indian and European cultures and is famous for its beaches and cafes.

To maximize your fun, you can participate in some of the local festivals such as Karthigai Deepam and Brahmotsavam, which are celebrated with great pomp and show at the Arunachalesvara Temple. You can also try your hand at pottery-making or silk-weaving, which are traditional crafts of the region. Lastly, make sure to take some time to relax and rejuvenate at one of the many Ayurvedic spas in the city.
