5-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Delhi and Rishikesh in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Exploring Delhi
    Arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport
    Drive to hotel in Connaught Place (30 minutes, 10 miles)

    In the morning, visit the iconic Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and marvel at its stunning architecture and history. For the afternoon, head to the Lotus Temple, a serene and beautiful temple open to all religions. In the evening, visit India Gate, a war memorial dedicated to the Indian soldiers who died in World War I.

  2. Day 2: Delhi's Cultural Heritage
    Travel from Connaught Place to Old Delhi (20 minutes, 4 miles)

    Start the day with a visit to Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India. Then, explore the bustling Chandni Chowk market and try some of Delhi's famous street food. In the afternoon, visit the Humayun's Tomb, a magnificent mausoleum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For the evening, head to Hauz Khas Village, a trendy neighbourhood filled with cafes, art galleries and street art.

  3. Day 3: Delhi to Rishikesh
    Travel from Connaught Place to Rishikesh (6 hours, 155 miles)

    Leave early in the morning for Rishikesh, a beautiful city situated on the banks of the Ganges river. After checking into the hotel, visit the Triveni Ghat, the most famous ghat in Rishikesh, for an evening aarti ceremony. Aarti is a Hindu ritual of worship where light from wicks soaked in ghee or oil is offered to one or more deities.

  4. Day 4: White Water Rafting and Yoga
    Travel from hotel to rafting point (30 minutes, 10 miles)

    Start the day with a thrilling white-water rafting experience on the Ganges river. After lunch, attend a yoga and meditation class to rejuvenate and relax. In the evening, visit the Beatles Ashram, a tranquil place where the Beatles stayed in the late 1960s and wrote many of their famous songs. The ashram is now abandoned, but its walls are covered with colourful graffiti art.

  5. Day 5: Bungee Jumping and Departure
    Travel from hotel to bungee jumping point (30 minutes, 10 miles)
    Travel from Rishikesh to Delhi (6 hours, 155 miles)

    Finish the trip with a thrilling bungee jumping experience at the Jumpin Heights adventure park. After lunch, head back to Delhi for your flight home.

Recommendations

If you have more time in Delhi, consider visiting the Qutub Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world, and the Akshardham Temple, a stunning temple complex with grand architecture. If you're interested in history, visit the National Museum and the Gandhi Smriti, a museum dedicated to the life of Mahatma Gandhi. For a side trip from Rishikesh, visit the Rajaji National Park, a beautiful park with wildlife such as elephants, tigers and leopards.
