4-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary for Ujjain in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    10 minutes (2.5 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

    Start your day early and visit one of the most important Hindu temples in India, Mahakaleshwar. You can witness the Bhasma Aarti, a unique ritual where the lingam is covered with ash. Afterward, you can visit Ram Ghat on the Shipra River, which is a great place to sit and relax. For lunch, head to the famous Mangalnath Temple which is known for its delicious prasadam. In the evening, visit the Kaliadeh Palace, located on the banks of the Shipra River and witness the stunning sunset from its terrace.

  2. Day 2: Kal Bhairav Temple and Bhartrihari Caves
    15 minutes (3.5 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Visit the Kal Bhairav Temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Bhairav, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Afterward, visit the Bhartrihari Caves, located on the banks of the Shipra River. These caves are believed to have been the meditation spot of the great philosopher Bhartrihari. For lunch, head to the famous Bheru Art & Chat House and try their delicious chaat. In the evening, attend the sound and light show at the Kalidas Academy.

  3. Day 3: Sandipani Ashram and Vedh Shala Observatory
    20 minutes (5 km) from Kal Bhairav Temple

    Start your day by visiting the Sandipani Ashram, a place where Lord Krishna and Sudama are believed to have studied. Afterward, visit the Vedh Shala Observatory, the oldest observatory in India which was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II. For lunch, head to the famous Bajrang Bali Poha Center and try their famous poha. In the evening, attend the evening aarti at Harsiddhi Mata Temple.

  4. Day 4: Jantar Mantar and Siddhavat
    15 minutes (3.5 km) from Vedh Shala Observatory

    Start your day by visiting the Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest stone observatories in the world. Afterward, visit Siddhavat, a sacred banyan tree that is said to fulfill wishes of those who tie a thread around it. For lunch, head to the famous Hari Om Bhojanalaya and try their thali. In the evening, visit the Mangalnath Temple and witness the Aarti.

Aside from these locations, you may also consider visiting the Chintaman Ganesh Temple, Iskcon Temple, and the Kshipra River. For side trips, you can visit the nearby city of Indore, which is famous for its street food and bazaars.
