7-Day Itinerary for Ladakh in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Leh Palace
    10 minutes (2.1 km) from Leh city center

    Start your trip with a visit to the Leh Palace in the morning. The palace offers breathtaking views of the city and the Himalayas. In the afternoon, explore the Namgyal Tsemo Gompa and the Shanti Stupa. In the evening, you can stroll around the Leh market and try local delicacies.

  2. Day 2: Nubra Valley
    5 hours (120 km) from Leh city center

    Head to Nubra Valley, known for its sand dunes and Bactrian camels. Visit the Diskit Monastery, which houses a 32-meter Maitreya Buddha statue. In the afternoon, enjoy camel rides and ATV rides in the sand dunes. Spend the night in a traditional Ladakhi homestay.

  3. Day 3: Pangong Lake
    5 hours (150 km) from Nubra Valley

    Visit the famous Pangong Lake, which stretches from India to China. Take a dip in the crystal-clear water and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Spend the night in a campsite near the lake.

  4. Day 4: Tso Moriri Lake
    6 hours (220 km) from Pangong Lake

    Drive to Tso Moriri Lake, another high-altitude lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Visit the Korzok Monastery, which overlooks the lake. Spend the night in a campsite near the lake.

  5. Day 5: Magnetic Hill and Alchi Monastery
    6 hours (200 km) from Tso Moriri Lake

    Visit the Magnetic Hill, where the natural terrain creates an optical illusion of cars rolling uphill. On the way back, stop at the Alchi Monastery, known for its unique Kashmiri-style wall paintings. Spend the night in Leh.

  6. Day 6: Hemis National Park
    1 hour (40 km) from Leh city center

    Take a day trip to Hemis National Park, which is home to the endangered snow leopard. Go on a wildlife safari and explore the park's stunning landscapes. In the evening, return to Leh and relax at a local café.

  7. Day 7: Khardung La Pass
    1.5 hours (40 km) from Leh city center

    End your trip with a visit to Khardung La Pass, the highest motorable road in the world. Enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Return to Leh and depart for your next destination.

In addition to the above itinerary, you can also explore the Zanskar Valley, visit the Hemis Monastery and the Thiksey Monastery, and go on a trek to Stok Kangri. You can also take a side trip to the nearby town of Kargil, which has a rich history and culture. To maximize your fun, make sure to acclimatize to the high altitude before starting your trip and drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness.
