2-Day City Experiences Itinerary in Ujjain for June 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple
10 minutes (2.3 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

Start your day with a visit to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Morning darshan is between 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM, so make sure to reach there on time to avoid the crowd. The temple's architecture is a mix of Maratha, Bhumija, and Chalukya styles, with intricate carvings adorning the walls. After your darshan, you can explore the nearby lanes to savor some delicious street food, such as poha jalebi or kachori. In the afternoon, head to Ram Ghat, situated on the banks of the Kshipra River, to attend the daily aarti. The aarti takes place at 4:00 PM and is a serene experience. Spend your evening admiring the sunset while taking a boat ride on the Kshipra River.

  2. Day 2: Kal Bhairav Temple and Vedh Shala Observatory
15 minutes (3.7 km) from Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Begin your day by visiting Kal Bhairav Temple, dedicated to Lord Bhairav, who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The temple has an eerie atmosphere, and it is customary to offer alcohol to Bhairav as prasad. The temple is open from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, so plan your visit accordingly. Afterward, head to the Vedh Shala Observatory, a 17th-century astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh II. The observatory is equipped with several instruments, including the Samrat Yantra, which is the largest sundial in the world. It is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In the evening, visit the Harsiddhi Temple, another important Hindu shrine in Ujjain, and attend the aarti that takes place around 7:00 PM.

Recommendations

If you have extra time in Ujjain, you can visit other religious and historical sites such as Mangalnath Temple, Sandipani Ashram, and Vikram Kirti Mandir Museum. You can also take a day trip to the nearby town of Indore to explore its culinary scene and visit the Lal Bagh Palace and the Kanch Mandir. To maximize your fun, try to attend the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, a festival that takes place every 12 years in Ujjain. The festival attracts millions of pilgrims who come to take a holy dip in the Kshipra River. Finally, don't forget to buy some traditional handicrafts and souvenirs from the local markets, such as Mahakaleshwar Mandir Bazaar and Bada Sarafa Bazaar.
