4-Day Itinerary for Orissa in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Puri Beach
    15 minutes (3.5 km) from Puri Railway Station

    Start your day by watching the sunrise at Puri Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Orissa. Take a stroll on the white sand or go for a swim in the Bay of Bengal. Afterward, head to Jagannath Temple, a 12th-century temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, his sister Subhadra and brother Balabhadra. In the evening, enjoy the famous Puri Beach Festival, held in early June, to experience local culture and music.

  2. Day 2: Konark Sun Temple and Chilika Lake
    1 hour 20 minutes (35 km) from Puri Beach

    Visit Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its intricate architecture and design. Spend the afternoon by Chilika Lake, Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, home to a variety of migratory birds and dolphins. Take a boat tour or go kayaking to explore the lake. In the evening, head to Raghurajpur Artist Village, known for its traditional Pattachitra paintings and handicrafts.

  3. Day 3: Lingaraj Temple and Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves
    30 minutes (10 km) from Raghurajpur Artist Village

    Start your day by visiting Lingaraj Temple, one of the oldest and most famous temples in Orissa, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Afterward, head to Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, ancient Jain rock-cut caves, known for their intricate carvings and inscriptions. Spend the evening at Ekamra Haat, a handicrafts market where you can shop for souvenirs and try local cuisine.

  4. Day 4: Mukteswara Temple and Dhauli Hill
    30 minutes (12 km) from Ekamra Haat

    Visit Mukteswara Temple, an 11th-century temple known for its beautiful stone carvings and architecture. Afterward, head to Dhauli Hill, a historic site where Emperor Ashoka renounced violence and embraced Buddhism. Spend the afternoon at Nandankanan Zoological Park, home to a variety of animals, including white tigers. In the evening, catch a light and sound show at Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the Ratnagiri and Udayagiri Buddhist Caves, home to ancient Buddhist monasteries and stupas. You can also take a day trip to the nearby city of Bhubaneswar, known for its ancient temples and museums.
