4-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Banaras in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Assi Ghat
    25 minutes (5.6 km) from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport

    Start your morning with a boat ride at Assi Ghat to witness the beautiful sunrise over the Ganges River. After the boat ride, explore the ghat and try some local street food. In the afternoon, visit the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the most revered temples in India. In the evening, watch the Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where priests perform a ritual of offering fire to the river.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    30 minutes (10 km) from Assi Ghat

    Start your morning with a visit to the Sarnath Archaeological Museum, where you can see ancient artifacts and sculptures. Afterward, visit the Sarnath Stupa, one of the most significant Buddhist sites, and learn about the teachings of Lord Buddha. In the evening, you can take a stroll in the Banaras Hindu University campus, where you can find various temples, art galleries, and gardens.

  3. Day 3: Ramnagar Fort and Chunar Fort

  4. Day 4: Bharat Kala Bhavan and Banaras Silk Emporium

    Start your morning by visiting the Bharat Kala Bhavan, a museum of art and archaeology that houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and textiles. Afterward, visit the Banaras Silk Emporium, where you can buy some authentic Banarasi sarees and other silk products. In the afternoon, visit the Tulsi Manas Mandir, a temple dedicated to Lord Rama and known for its beautiful architecture and religious significance.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider taking a day trip to Allahabad, located 2 hours (125 km) from Banaras. In Allahabad, you can visit the Triveni Sangam, where three rivers meet. You can also visit the Allahabad Fort and Anand Bhavan, the former residence of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Maximize your fun by taking a food tour of the city, where you can sample some of the best local dishes. You can also attend a classical music concert at the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple.

Don't forget to try the famous Banarasi paan, a popular local delicacy made of betel leaf, areca nut, and various fillings. Also, keep in mind that Banaras can be hot and humid in June, so make sure to carry sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable footwear.
