A Shoestring Budget Day Trip to Roorkee in June 2023

  1. 9:00 AM: Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
    10 minutes (3.2 km) from Roorkee Railway Station

    Visit the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee that boasts of its remarkable history and impressive architecture. IIT Roorkee was the first engineering college in India and is located on the banks of the Ganges. Enjoy a serene walk around the campus and gardens, and take in the beautiful views of the river.

  2. 11:30 AM: Piran Kaliyar Sharif
    25 minutes (10 km) from IIT Roorkee

    Located on the outskirts of Roorkee, Piran Kaliyar Sharif is a popular Sufi shrine built in memory of the great saint, Hazrat Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir Kalyari. The shrine attracts thousands of devotees from all over the world. This is an excellent place to explore the rich Islamic heritage of India.

  3. 1:30 PM: Gurdwara Nanaksar
    20 minutes (7 km) from Piran Kaliyar Sharif

    Visit the Gurdwara Nanaksar that is located in the heart of the city. It is a beautiful place of worship for Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike. The serene atmosphere of the Gurdwara is perfect for meditation and introspection. Don't forget to try the delicious langar that is served to everyone regardless of their religion.

  4. 3:00 PM: Solani Aqueduct
    10 minutes (4.5 km) from Gurdwara Nanaksar

    Feast your eyes on the magnificent Solani Aqueduct, which is the oldest and largest aqueduct in India. It is an excellent example of British engineering and is still in use today. The best time to visit is during monsoon season when the canal is full of water and the surroundings are lush green.

  5. 4:30 PM: Patanjali Yogpeeth
    15 minutes (6 km) from Solani Aqueduct

    Visit the famous Patanjali Yogpeeth that was founded by Baba Ramdev, a renowned Yoga Guru. The center offers Ayurvedic treatments, Yoga, and meditation courses, and has a popular Ayurvedic pharmacy. There are also beautiful gardens and fountains that make for a perfect place to relax and unwind.

  6. 6:00 PM: Roorkee Cantonment Board Park
    15 minutes (4 km) from Patanjali Yogpeeth

    End your day at the Roorkee Cantonment Board Park that is spread over 15 acres of land. It is an excellent place to enjoy a picnic, take a stroll, or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings. The park has a jogging track, children's play area, and beautiful fountains.

Recommendations

If you have additional time, you might consider visiting the Bann Ganga Wetland Conservation Reserve that is home to various migratory birds. Another side trip that you could take is to visit Haridwar, which is just 30 minutes from Roorkee and is known for its famous Kumbh Mela and for being the gateway to the Char Dham Yatra. You can also plan to visit the nearby hill stations of Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, and Chakrata for a more extended trip. Be sure to sample the delicious local street food that is available all over Roorkee.
