Begin your morning with a visit to the magnificent Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as the Big Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple was built by the Chola King Raja Raja I in the 11th century and is an outstanding example of Dravidian architecture. Spend some time exploring the temple complex and marvel at the impressive 66-metre-tall vimana (tower). In the afternoon, visit the Thanjavur Royal Palace and Art Gallery, which houses a rare collection of artefacts, including art, coins, and sculptures, dating back to the 9th century. Watch the light and sound show in the evening to learn about the rich cultural heritage of the Chola dynasty.
On your second day, visit the Airavatesvara Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the town of Darasuram, about 35 kilometres from Thanjavur. The temple was built by the Chola King Rajaraja II in the 12th century and is known for its exquisite carvings and sculptures. Spend the morning exploring the temple complex, including the main shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the smaller shrines dedicated to other deities. In the afternoon, visit the Schwartz Church, which was built by the Danish missionary Christian Friedrich Schwartz in the late 18th century. The church is a fine example of European architecture and houses some fascinating memorabilia from the colonial period. In the evening, enjoy a picturesque sunset at the Serfoji Sarasvati Mahal Library, which overlooks the beautiful Saraswathi Mahal Palace.
If you have more time, you can also visit the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, which is about an hour's drive from Thanjavur and is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also take a day trip to the nearby town of Kumbakonam, which is famous for its temples and is also known as the "temple town." If you're interested in history, you can visit the Sangeetha Mahal Palace, which houses a museum dedicated to the Nayak dynasty. To maximize your fun, you can take a guided tour of the city on a bicycle or a tuk-tuk, which will take you to all the major attractions. Don't forget to try the local cuisine, especially the traditional South Indian thali meal, which is available at most restaurants in the city.
