5-Day Shoestring Budget Itinerary for Goa in October 2023

  1. Day 1: Explore Panjim
    30 minutes (11.4 km) from Goa International Airport

    Start your day at the historic Fontainhas neighborhood, known for its narrow winding streets and colorful Portuguese-style houses. Visit the 18th-century Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, followed by the state museum, where you can learn about Goa's history. In the afternoon, head to Miramar Beach to relax and soak up the sun. In the evening, visit the bustling market at Mapusa for some local shopping and street food.

  2. Day 2: Explore Old Goa
    30 minutes (10.8 km) from Panjim

    After breakfast, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Goa, which was the capital of Portuguese India until the mid-18th century. Highlights include the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which houses the remains of St. Francis Xavier, and the Se Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Asia. In the afternoon, head to the nearby village of Ponda to visit the Shantadurga and Mangueshi temples, two of the most important Hindu temples in Goa. End your day with a sunset boat cruise on the Mandovi River.

  3. Day 3: Visit South Goa Beaches
    1 hour 15 minutes (50.4 km) from Old Goa

    Start your day with a visit to the Cabo de Rama Fort, a 17th-century Portuguese fort perched on a cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea. Afterward, head to the beaches of South Goa, such as Colva or Palolem, for some relaxation and water sports. In the evening, attend a traditional Goan dance and music performance at one of the local cultural centers.

  4. Day 4: Explore the Dudhsagar Waterfalls
    2 hours 15 minutes (75 km) from South Goa beaches

    Wake up early and head to the Dudhsagar Waterfalls, one of the highest waterfalls in India. You can take a train ride or a jeep safari through the Western Ghats to reach the falls. Once you reach there, take a dip in the pool below the falls or go trekking in the surrounding forests. In the evening, head back to your hotel and relax.

  5. Day 5: Visit the Spice Plantations
    1 hour 20 minutes (40.5 km) from Dudhsagar Waterfalls

    On your last day, visit the spice plantations in Ponda, where you can learn about the cultivation and processing of various spices and herbs. Take a guided tour to taste some of the local spices and herbs and enjoy a traditional Goan lunch. In the evening, head back to the airport for your flight home.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the churches and temples in the neighboring state of Karnataka, such as the Gokarnanatheshwara Temple and St. Aloysius Chapel in Mangalore. You can also take a day trip to the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary to see some of the unique flora and fauna of the region. To maximize your fun, try to attend a local festival or event, such as the Goa Carnival or the International Film Festival of India. Don't forget to sample some of the local seafood and Goan cuisine, such as vindaloo and fish curry.
