4-Day Shoestring Budget Itinerary for Bhutan in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Paro
    10 minutes (2.6 km) from Paro International Airport

    In the morning, hike up to the iconic Paro Taktsang, also known as the Tiger's Nest monastery, a 3-hour trek with breathtaking views of the valley. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum of Bhutan to learn about the country's history and culture. In the evening, stroll around the Paro town square and visit the local market to grab some souvenirs.

  2. Day 2: Thimphu
    1 hour 25 minutes (54.9 km) from Paro

    In the morning, visit the Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in memory of the third king of Bhutan. In the afternoon, explore the Buddha Dordenma, a massive statue of Buddha overlooking the Thimphu valley. In the evening, catch a traditional Bhutanese cultural show at the Royal Academy of Performing Arts.

  3. Day 3: Punakha
    2 hours 30 minutes (85.3 km) from Thimphu

    In the morning, hike up to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten for a stunning view of the Punakha valley. In the afternoon, visit the Punakha Dzong, a beautiful fortress and former residence of Bhutan's rulers. In the evening, relax with a hot stone bath at a local spa.

  4. Day 4: Haa Valley
    3 hours 30 minutes (107 km) from Punakha

    In the morning, drive to the scenic Haa Valley and visit the Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo temples. In the afternoon, hike to the nearby villages and interact with the friendly locals. In the evening, enjoy a picnic with stunning views of the valley before heading back to Paro.

Recommendations

Don't miss the Dochula Pass, en route to Punakha, which offers picturesque views of the Himalayas. You could also visit the Chele La Pass for even more mountain views. If you have more time, explore the remote Bumthang valley or take a side trip to the Phobjikha Valley for some birdwatching. To maximize your fun, try to attend one of the many local festivals happening across the country during August, such as the Ura Yakchoe or the Haa Summer Festival.
