2-Day Itinerary for Pondicherry in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Auroville
    30 minutes (8.6km) from Pondicherry city centre

    Morning: Auroville is a unique experimental township founded in 1968. It is a place where people from all over the world, regardless of nationality, race or religion, can work together to build a universal, peaceful and sustainable society. Start your visit by exploring the Matrimandir, which is the spiritual and physical center of Auroville. The golden globe is a meditation space and a symbol of human unity.

    Afternoon: Enjoy a delicious vegetarian lunch at the Solar Kitchen, which is a community kitchen that serves food to Aurovillians and visitors. After lunch, you can visit the Auroville Beach, which is a quiet and serene place to relax and unwind. You can also rent a bicycle and explore the surrounding villages.

    Evening: Head back to Pondicherry and visit the promenade, which is a 1.5 km long stretch along the Bay of Bengal. You can take a leisurely walk or hire a bicycle and enjoy the sea breeze. The promenade is also home to several landmarks like the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and the War Memorial.

  2. Day 2: Sri Aurobindo Ashram and French Quarter
    10 minutes (3.5km) from Auroville

    Morning: Start your day with a visit to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, which is a spiritual community founded by Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Alfassa in 1926. The ashram is a peaceful and serene place to meditate and reflect. You can also visit the samadhi, which is the final resting place of Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Alfassa.

    Afternoon: After a spiritual morning, it's time to explore the vibrant French Quarter. Take a walking tour of the quaint streets and admire the colonial-era buildings with their distinctive Franco-Tamil architecture. Stop at the Notre Dame des Anges, which is a beautiful church that dates back to the 18th century.

    Evening: End your day with a sunset cruise along the backwaters of Pondicherry. You can hire a boat and enjoy the views of the mangrove forests and the local fishing villages. You can also try your hand at fishing or crabbing.

Recommendations

If you have more time, visit the Gingee Fort, which is a 1.5-hour drive from Pondicherry. It is an impressive fort that dates back to the 16th century. You can also take a day trip to the nearby town of Mahabalipuram, which is famous for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed temples and monuments.
