Portugal: 5-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Lisbon City Center
    15 minutes (5.7 km) from Lisbon Airport

    In the morning, explore the downtown area with a visit to the Sé de Lisboa (Lisbon Cathedral) and the Castelo de São Jorge (St. George's Castle). Take a break for lunch in Praça do Comércio, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. In the afternoon, visit the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (National Tile Museum) to discover the history and beauty of traditional Portuguese tiles. End the day at Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  2. Day 2: LX Factory and Time Out Market
    20 minutes (7.5 km) from Lisbon City Center

    Start the day at the LX Factory, a creative hub filled with vintage shops, trendy cafes and art galleries. Have lunch at Time Out Market, a popular food hall with a variety of stalls. In the afternoon, visit the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) and the nearby Monument to the Discoveries. End the day with a walk along the Tagus River and enjoy the sunset at Cais das Colunas.

  3. Day 3: Fátima and Batalha
    2 hours (123 km) from Lisbon City Center

    Take a day trip to Fátima, one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, where the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. Stop by the nearby town of Batalha to visit the Monastery of Batalha, a Gothic masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  4. Day 4: Nazaré and Óbidos
    1 hour 20 minutes (102 km) from Lisbon City Center

    In the morning, visit the picturesque fishing village of Nazaré, known for its giant waves and traditional costumes. Take a cable car to the top of Sítio for a panoramic view of the coast. Have lunch at a seafood restaurant by the beach. In the afternoon, visit the medieval town of Óbidos, surrounded by imposing walls and narrow streets. End the day with a glass of ginjinha, a cherry liqueur typical of the region.

  5. Day 5: Sintra
    40 minutes (28 km) from Lisbon City Center

    Visit Sintra, a magical town full of palaces, gardens and forests. Start with a visit to the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, a mix of Gothic, Manueline and Moorish styles. Continue to the Quinta da Regaleira, a mysterious mansion surrounded by gardens, caves and tunnels. Have lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the famous Pena Palace, a romantic and eclectic palace that looks like it came out of a fairy tale.
