2-Day Banaras Itinerary for August 2023

  1. Day 1: Assi Ghat
    10 minutes (2.1 km) from Banaras Junction

    In the morning, head to Assi Ghat, a popular spot for morning rituals and boat rides along the Ganges. Take a dip in the holy river and observe the locals performing prayers. For lunch, try some delicious street food at Ram Bhandar. Afternoon, visit the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, an ancient and sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the evening, attend the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti, a Hindu ritual of worship offered to the Ganges River. The ceremony is performed by a group of priests who chant mantras and songs while they light oil lamps and ring bells.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    30 minutes (10 km) from Banaras Junction

    On day two, take a trip to Sarnath, one of the important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Here, you can visit the famous Dhamekh Stupa, the Sarnath Museum, and the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar temple. In the afternoon, head to the famous Banaras Hindu University, one of the largest residential universities in Asia. The campus is spread over a large area and has several historic buildings and temples. In the evening, visit the Ramnagar Fort, a beautiful and historic fort located on the riverbank of Ganges, and watch the spectacular light and sound show.

Aside from the above itinerary, you can also consider visiting the Tulsi Manas Temple, the Alamgir Mosque, and the Chunar Fort. A side trip to the nearby Chunar town is also recommended where you can explore the Chunar Fort, visit the Vanganga Lake, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the region. To maximize your fun, try out the famous Banarasi paan, a popular mouth freshener made with betel leaf, areca nut and various fillings. You can also take a boat ride during sunrise or sunset for a unique and beautiful experience.
