Pondicherry Itinerary for 2 Days in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Aurobindo Ashram
10 minutes (2.2 km) from Pondicherry Promenade Beach

Start your day with a visit to the Aurobindo Ashram, founded by Sri Aurobindo and his companion, the Mother. The ashram is a spiritual community that focuses on yoga and meditation. In the morning, attend the collective meditation session and then explore the ashram's library, art gallery, and boutique. For lunch, try some of the delicious vegetarian food at the ashram's cafeteria. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Manakula Vinayagar Temple and enjoy the peaceful temple surroundings. In the evening, head to the Promenade Beach to watch the sunset and stroll along the seaside promenade.

  2. Day 2: Auroville
30 minutes (13.7 km) from Pondicherry Promenade Beach

Today, take a trip to Auroville, an experimental township founded by The Mother in 1968. Begin your day with a visit to the Matrimandir, a golden sphere that serves as the town's spiritual center. Take a guided tour to learn about the town's architecture, sustainable living practices, and community projects. Have lunch at one of the cafes in Auroville, and then visit the nearby beaches - Serenity Beach and Auroville Beach. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the beaches, and indulge in water sports like surfing and paddleboarding. In the evening, head back to Pondicherry and visit the Botanical Garden, which houses a variety of exotic plants and trees.

Recommendations

If you have time, consider taking a day trip to Mahabalipuram, the UNESCO World Heritage site, which is about 2.5 hours from Pondicherry. Another popular attraction is the French War Memorial, which is dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. For a unique experience, take a heritage walk through the French Quarter and explore the colonial architecture. To maximize your fun, try some of the local cuisine, like the traditional South Indian dosa and idli or the French-inspired croissants and baguettes. Finally, don't forget to shop for souvenirs, like handcrafted pottery, silk fabrics, and incense sticks, in the local markets.
