2-Day Shoestring Budget Itinerary for Florence in July 2023

  1. Day 1: The Duomo Complex
    10 minutes (0.5 miles) from Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station

    Start your day at the Duomo Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and climb Giotto's Bell Tower for stunning views of the city. Afterward, explore the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and marvel at its iconic dome. Finally, visit the Baptistery of San Giovanni and admire its beautiful bronze doors.

    For lunch, head to Il Mercato Centrale, a lively indoor market with a wide variety of food stalls. In the afternoon, visit the Basilica di Santa Croce, the largest Franciscan church in the world. It houses the tombs of many famous figures such as Michelangelo, Dante, and Galileo Galilei. In the evening, stroll along the Arno River and enjoy stunning views of the Ponte Vecchio.

  2. Day 2: Uffizi Gallery and Piazzale Michelangelo

    Start your day at the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most famous art museums in the world. Book your tickets in advance to skip the long lines and admire works of art from Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. For lunch, head to All'Antico Vinaio, a historic sandwich shop that offers delicious and affordable paninis.

    In the afternoon, take a walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo, a hilltop square with panoramic views of the city. Along the way, stop at the San Miniato al Monte church, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. In the evening, head to the Santo Spirito neighborhood and enjoy aperitivo, a pre-dinner drink with small snacks, at one of the many bars in the area.

Recommendations

Make sure to visit the Palazzo Vecchio, a historic fortress-palace that houses the city's town hall and many works of art. If you have extra time, consider taking a day trip to the nearby towns of Pisa or Siena, both of which offer stunning architecture and delicious food.
