Exploring Lonavala in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Karla Caves
    25 minutes (9.3 km) from Lonavala

    In the morning, visit the Karla Caves, which is a complex of ancient Indian Buddhist rock-cut cave shrines located in Karli near Lonavala. The caves date back to 2nd century BCE and house intricate sculptures and carvings depicting scenes from the life of Buddha. For lunch, head to The Kinara Village Dhaba, which serves delicious North Indian food. In the afternoon, explore the Bhaja Caves, which are a group of 22 rock-cut caves located in a hill station near Lonavala. The caves have stupas, chaityas, and viharas which are indicative of the Buddhist culture from the 2nd century BCE to the 6th century CE. In the evening, go to Lonavala Lake, which is a serene spot to relax and enjoy the sunset.

  2. Day 2: Rajmachi Fort
    1 hour 10 minutes (27.5 km) from Lonavala

    Start your day early and head to Rajmachi Fort, a historical fortification located in the Sahyadri mountain range. The fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century and offers stunning views of the surrounding hills. Pack a picnic lunch and spend your afternoon exploring the fort and the surrounding areas. In the evening, visit the Lonavala Wax Museum, which houses wax statues of famous personalities from various fields.

  3. Day 3: Tiger's Leap
    22 minutes (8.3 km) from Lonavala

    Start your day with a visit to Tiger's Leap, which is a cliff-top with a sheer drop of over 650m. The cliff looks like a leaping tiger and provides a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys. After taking in the view, head to Lonavala Bazaar for some souvenir shopping and local food. In the afternoon, visit the Ryewood Park and Shivaji Udyan, which is spread across 25 acres and has a variety of trees and plants. In the evening, head back to Lonavala Lake to take a leisurely boat ride.

Recommendations

If you have time, do visit the Kune Waterfalls, which is a scenic waterfall located near Lonavala. You can also take a road trip to the nearby hill stations of Khandala and Matheran. To ensure a hassle-free trip, book a cab or self-drive car in advance.
