3-Day Itinerary for Pondicherry in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Explore The French Quarters
    10 minutes (2.3 km) from Pondicherry Airport

    Morning: Start your day by exploring the charming French Quarters which will take you back to the colonial era. Head to the iconic Notre Dame des Anges which is a beautiful church and is famous for its colour-changing stained glass windows. After that, visit the Sacred Heart Basilica, a Gothic-style church that looks over the Bay of Bengal.

    Afternoon: For lunch, try the famous French dishes at Rendezvous or Le Club. Then head to the Pondicherry Museum which houses a collection of bronze and stone sculptures dating back to the Pallava and Chola dynasties.

    Evening: Take a stroll along the Promenade Beach to enjoy the beautiful sunset. You can also rent a bicycle and cycle around the city to enjoy its French architecture. End your day with a delicious dinner at Satsanga, a rooftop restaurant with a beautiful view of the sea.

  2. Day 2: Auroville and Matrimandir
    25 minutes (10 km) from French Quarters

    Morning: Today, visit Auroville, an experimental township founded in 1968. Start your day with a healthy breakfast at the Auroville Bakery. Then head to Matrimandir, a golden dome that represents the universal mother and is the soul of Auroville.

    Afternoon: For lunch, head to Tanto Pizzeria, a famous Italian restaurant in Auroville. Then, explore the Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual community founded by Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator, The Mother.

    Evening: End your day with a visit to Serenity Beach and enjoy the calm and serene atmosphere. You can also try surfing or take a dip in the sea. For dinner, head to Villa Shanti, a French-Indian fusion restaurant that offers a unique culinary experience.

  3. Day 3: Chunnambar Boat House and Paradise Beach
    20 minutes (8.4 km) from Auroville

    Morning: Start your day with a visit to the Chunnambar Boat House and take a boat ride to Paradise Beach. The boat ride will take you through the backwaters of Pondicherry, surrounded by lush greenery.

    Afternoon: For lunch, head to Surguru, a famous vegetarian restaurant serving South Indian cuisine. Then, head to the Botanical Garden which is home to a wide range of exotic plants and trees.

    Evening: End your day with a visit to the Ousteri Lake and enjoy the beautiful sunset. You can also take a boat ride on the lake. For dinner, head to The Lighthouse, a rooftop restaurant that offers a panoramic view of the city.

Recommendations

If you have time, visit the Gingee Fort, a historical fort that is around 70 km from Pondicherry. You can also visit the Auroville Beach or the Promenade Beach for a morning jog or a peaceful walk. Don't miss the Pondicherry Street Food Festival that happens in June every year.
