Chickmagalur, Thirthahalli, and Agumbe: A 4-Day Itinerary in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mullayanagiri Peak
    2 hours (55.8 km) from Chickmagalur

    In the morning, enjoy a breathtaking view of the sunrise at Mullayanagiri Peak, the highest peak in Karnataka, while sipping a hot cup of coffee. Afterward, head to Kavikal Gandi Viewpoint for a spectacular panoramic view and capture some memorable moments. For lunch, make a quick stop at one of the small roadside eateries near the viewpoint to taste some authentic local food. In the afternoon, visit the stunning Hebbe Falls and relax in the natural surroundings. In the evening, head to Baba Budangiri Hills to enjoy the sunset and do some trekking if time permits.

  2. Day 2: Sringeri Sharada Peetham and Agumbe Rainforest Research Station
    2 hours 30 minutes (85.4 km) from Mullayanagiri Peak

    Start your day by visiting the famous Sringeri Sharada Peetham, a Hindu monastery set up by the great saint Sri Adi Shankaracharya. Afterward, take a 45-minute drive to the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station to learn about the flora and fauna of the Western Ghats. You can also join a guided trek along the many trails in the rainforest. For lunch, try some delicious food at the small eateries near the research station. In the evening, head to the Barkana Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in India and enjoy the mesmerizing view of the sunset.

  3. Day 3: Kuppali and Kavishaila
    1 hour (31.2 km) from Agumbe Rainforest Research Station

    Start your day by visiting Kuppali, the birthplace of the famous Kannada poet Kuvempu. Visit the Kavishaila, an open-air auditorium, and the Kavimane, a museum dedicated to Kuvempu's life and works. In the afternoon, head over to the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary for a jeep safari and spot some of the exotic animals and birds. For lunch, try some local delicacies at one of the small restaurants near the sanctuary. In the evening, relax by the banks of the beautiful Bhadra River and enjoy the serene surroundings.

  4. Day 4: Coffee Plantations and Kemmangundi
    2 hours 30 minutes (71.3 km) from Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

    Start your day by visiting one of the many coffee plantations in the region and learn about the history, cultivation, and processing of coffee. Afterward, drive to the Kemmangundi Hill Station and visit the beautiful Z Point for a panoramic view of the countryside. For lunch, try some authentic local food at one of the small restaurants near the hill station. In the evening, visit the Kalhatti Falls, a majestic waterfall surrounded by lush green forests, and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, you can visit the Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple, a famous Hindu temple located in the Western Ghats. You can also try camping at one of the many campsites in the region for a unique experience. If you want to extend your trip, you can also visit the nearby cities of Udupi and Mangalore.
