Exploring Nature in Maharashtra in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Sinhagad Fort
30 minutes (12.5 miles) from Pune

Start your day early with a scenic drive to Sinhagad Fort, situated on a hilltop, offering breathtaking views of the Sahyadri mountain range and the city of Pune. Opt for a guided trek to the fort to learn about its rich history and significance in the Maratha Empire. Take a break for lunch at one of the local cafes and try some traditional Maharashtrian delicacies. Spend the afternoon exploring the nearby Khadakwasla Dam and enjoy the cool breeze while taking a boat ride. As the evening approaches, head back to Pune and visit the Aga Khan Palace, which served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife, and his secretary during India's freedom struggle.

  2. Day 2: Kaas Plateau
2 hours (69 miles) from Pune

Today, leave early for a scenic drive to the Kaas Plateau, also known as the Valley of Flowers of Maharashtra. The plateau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to over 850 species of flowering plants, including some rare and endemic ones. Take a guided tour to learn about the unique ecosystem and various species that thrive here. After lunch, explore the nearby Thoseghar Waterfalls, and enjoy the serene beauty of the cascading waterfalls. As the sun sets, head back to Pune, stopping by the Pune Okayama Friendship Garden to enjoy the tranquil Japanese-style garden and the beautiful sunset views.

Recommendations

For a day trip, consider visiting the historic Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Aurangabad, or the hill station of Mahabaleshwar.
