3-Day Adventure Itinerary for Chitkul via Spiti (October 2023)

  1. Day 1: Arrival in Spiti Valley
    6 hours (123 miles) from Shimla

    In the morning, arrive in Spiti Valley, check-in to your hotel and have breakfast. In the afternoon, visit the Key Monastery, one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Spiti, known for its unique architecture and ancient murals. In the evening, head to Kibber Village, one of the highest inhabited villages in the world, and take a walk around the village.

  2. Day 2: Chitkul Village
    5 hours (62 miles) from Kaza

    Drive to Chitkul Village, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border, also known as the "last village of India". In the morning, visit the Kamru Fort, located near Sangla Valley, which showcases the architectural style of the region. In the afternoon, explore the village, interact with the locals, and take a hike around the beautiful Baspa River. In the evening, relax and enjoy the magnificent views while sipping hot tea from a local teashop.

  3. Day 3: Return to Shimla
    8 hours (185 miles) from Chitkul Village

    On the last day, take a six-hour drive through the Hindustan-Tibet Highway, one of the highest motorable roads in the world, and enjoy the stunning views of the Spiti Valley. In the afternoon, visit the Kufri Fun World amusement park and try your hand at skiing, tobogganing, or go-karting. End the day with a stroll around the Mall Road to shop for souvenirs.

Recommendations

If you have an extra day, visit the Pin Valley National Park, home to endangered species such as the snow leopard and Siberian ibex. You can also go on a day trip to the Chandratal Lake, known for its crystal-clear waters and spectacular views. To maximize your fun, try local dishes such as momos, thukpa, and chhang, and attend local cultural festivals such as Fagli, Phulaich, and Lossar.
