Mumbai: 3-Day City Experience Itinerary in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Gateway of India
30 minutes (11.1 km) from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

Begin your Mumbai adventure at its most iconic landmark, the Gateway of India. Built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, this Indo-Saracenic archway now serves as a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Start your morning with a boat ride to Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just off the coast of Mumbai. In the afternoon, explore the Colaba Causeway market and indulge in some street food. End your day with a visit to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, a magnificent Victorian Gothic building and another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  2. Day 2: Dharavi Slum
30 minutes (8.9 km) from the Gateway of India

While a visit to a slum may not seem like an obvious tourist destination, Dharavi is a unique community with a thriving economy and an incredible entrepreneurial spirit. Join a guided tour to learn about the small-scale industries that make up the heart of Dharavi, such as recycling, pottery, and embroidery. In the afternoon, visit the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, the largest open-air laundry in the world. End your day at the Haji Ali Dargah, a mosque and tomb located on an islet off the coast of Worli.

  3. Day 3: Bandra
40 minutes (10.6 km) from Dharavi Slum

Begin your morning with a visit to the Mount Mary Church, a beautiful basilica with stunning views of the Arabian Sea. Next, walk along Carter Road and enjoy the sea breeze and trendy cafes. In the afternoon, explore the vibrant street art scene at the St+art Mumbai festival, held annually in various locations throughout the city. End your day with a visit to the Bandra Fort, a 17th-century Portuguese fort with panoramic views of the sea.

Recommendations

For a day trip, consider visiting the Elephanta Caves or the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. You can also take a ferry ride to the nearby Elephanta Island for some peace and quiet away from the bustling city. To maximize your fun, try some of Mumbai's famous street food, such as vada pav, pav bhaji, and bhel puri, but make sure to choose reputable vendors to avoid food poisoning.
