Start your day early to avoid the crowds and heat. The climb to the caves takes roughly an hour, so wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Inside the caves, you'll see ancient inscriptions, petroglyphs and cave paintings. Spend the afternoon exploring Kalpetta's local markets and trying out traditional Kerala cuisine. In the evening, visit the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India.
The Thirunelli Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Surrounded by mountains and forests, the temple is located in a serene valley and is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Kerala. The temple architecture is breathtaking, and the temple pond is said to have curative powers. After your visit to the temple, head to the nearby Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary for a nature hike. The sanctuary is home to a variety of birds, animals and plants. End your day with a visit to the Soochipara Waterfalls, a stunning three-tiered waterfall tucked away in the forests of Vellarimala.
If you have time, consider visiting the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary or the Karapuzha Dam. A day trip to the nearby hill stations of Munnar or Ooty is also recommended.
