New Delhi Railway Station Itinerary - Shoestring Budget (June 2023)

  1. Day 1: Jama Masjid
    5 minutes (1.1 km) from New Delhi Railway Station

    Begin your day by exploring one of the largest mosques in India, Jama Masjid. Built-in 1656, it boasts of a stunning red sandstone and marble structure and can hold up to 25,000 worshippers. The morning is an excellent time to visit to avoid the crowds and take in the magnificent architecture. Afternoon at Jama Masjid is an ideal time to enjoy the street food around the mosque which offers a variety of dishes such as kebabs, parathas, and biryanis. In the evening, head to the terrace of one of the rooftop restaurants nearby for a sunset view of the mosque.

  2. Day 1: Red Fort
    10 minutes (2.7 km) from Jama Masjid

    Head to the iconic Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that served as the residence of the Mughal Emperors for over 200 years. The fort is open from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM and provides an audio guide in multiple languages. The fort complex houses museums that exhibit Mughal artifacts and the light and sound shows in the evening are an excellent way to conclude your visit. The afternoon is a great time to explore the neighboring markets of Chandni Chowk, offering a variety of street food, textiles, and jewelry.

  3. Day 2: Qutub Minar
    45 minutes (17.8 km) from Red Fort

    Begin your day at the tallest brick minaret in the world, the Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in 1193. The complex also houses monuments and buildings from the Sultanate period, including the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, which is one of the oldest mosques in India. The evening is an excellent time to visit the Hauz Khas Village, a trendy and bustling neighborhood that offers street art, boutiques, and cafes. You can conclude your day by visiting the Deer Park, which is a quiet green space that houses peacocks and deer.

  4. Day 2: Lotus Temple
    25 minutes (12.6 km) from Qutub Minar

    The last spot on our itinerary is the Lotus Temple, a Baháʼí House of Worship known for its unique flower-like shape. The temple is open from 9:30 AM to 7 PM and is a beautiful spot to visit during sunset. The temple also houses a small museum that explains the Baháʼí faith. The afternoon is an excellent time to visit the nearby Nehru Place market, popular for electronic goods and Indian wear. You can conclude your day by visiting the ISKCON temple, which offers a serene and spiritual atmosphere.

Recommendations

If you have time, do consider visiting the National Museum, which houses an excellent collection of Indian art, history and culture. Day trips to Agra and Jaipur are highly recommended as they offer a glimpse into the rich history of India. Maximise your fun by exploring the street food stalls that offer local delicacies such as samosas, chaat, and jalebis.
