Maseru is the capital city of Lesotho, a landlocked country in Southern Africa. Start your day by visiting the Maseru Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the city. This will give you an insight into Basotho culture and fashion. Next, head to the Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village, an open-air museum that takes you back in time to the early 19th century when the Basotho nation was founded. End the day by witnessing a beautiful sunset at the Maletsunyane Falls which is just an hour's drive from the city.
Start your day by visiting the Liphofung Caves which are located in Quthing district. This site is home to dinosaur fossils and features unique San rock art, providing a real sense of history. Next, head to the Sehlabathebe National Park, located on the border of Lesotho and South Africa. This UNESCO world heritage site is home to some of Lesotho's most stunning scenery, including waterfalls, rock formations, and wildflowers. If you're lucky, you might spot some of the park's unique wildlife, such as the Maloti Minnow, which is found only in this region.
You can get around Maseru using taxis, minibusses or hiring a car. Public transportation is cheap and readily available, but not always reliable. Hiring a car will give you flexibility in terms of where you can go, but it can be expensive. Expect to pay around LSL 40-60 for a taxi ride within the city centre and about LSL 700-900 for a rental car per day.
If you have extra time, consider visiting the Ha Kome Cave Dwellings, which are located about 50 minutes away from Maseru. These caves are believed to have been inhabited by the Basotho people for over four centuries. You can also try the traditional Basotho food at a local restaurant, such as the Maqalika's or Mohokare Guest House. If you have less time, skip one of the national parks and focus on the city attractions.
The main airport in Lesotho is the Moshoeshoe International Airport (MSU), which is located about 18 km from the city centre of Maseru. It serves both domestic and international flights, including flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Taxis and shuttles are available at the airport and can take you to your hotel or other destinations in the city.
