Spend a peaceful morning among nature while indulging in the island's laid-back vibes.
Meander through Roatan's only botanical garden - Carambola Gardens - and get lost in its winding paths enveloped by lush tropical foliage, including orchids, palms, and cacti. Hire a guide or take a self-guided tour and learn about the garden's history, species, and their role in the island ecosystem.
Get ready for some monkey business! Gumbalimba Park is home to white-faced capuchin and howler monkeys, among other exotic wildlife like macaws, parrots, and toucans. Explore the park's hiking trails through jungles, a caves system, a pirate's lair, and even get to enjoy a dip in the fresh water. Make sure to also visit the park's beach and take a relaxing swim before heading back to your hotel.
End your nature escapade with a visit to Roatan Butterfly Garden, a serene sanctuary with over 20 species of butterflies fluttering around in a natural setting. Take a guided tour and observe these colorful creatures up close, while also learning about their life cycle, behavior, and habitat. The garden also boasts a hummingbird and orchid viewing area for those seeking a peaceful retreat from the island's hustle and bustle.
Roatan's public transportation is limited and often unreliable, so consider renting a car or hiring a private driver to ensure smooth travel between destinations. Taxis are also available but can be expensive in comparison, and visitors should be prepared to negotiate rates before setting off on their journey. Note that several attractions may require additional fees for parking or admission, so be sure to budget accordingly. Driving time between each attraction ranges from 20 minutes to an hour.
If you have more time, consider adding a half-day trip to West End Village, a bustling area filled with restaurants, bars, and shops, and also a launching point for snorkeling and diving tours. If you're looking for a more uber-adventurous experience, opt for the Island Routes Off-Road Adventures guided tours where you drive your own off-road vehicle on highlight reels of the tropical island’s bumpy terrain. This activity will take about 4 hours for $180 per person.
