4-Day Mumbai Itinerary for City Experience in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Gateway of India
    30 minutes (12 km) from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

    In the morning, visit the iconic Gateway of India, a popular landmark and a popular spot for photography. Afterwards, head to Colaba Causeway where you can find local street markets and handicrafts. Have lunch at Leopold Cafe, an iconic restaurant that has been serving since 1871. In the afternoon, visit the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum, which displays Indian art, history, and culture. Finally, end your day with an evening walk along Marine Drive, known as the Queen's Necklace, and enjoy the sunset.

  2. Day 2: Elephanta Caves
    1 hour ferry ride from Gateway of India

    Take a ferry to Elephanta Island to see the ancient Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which contains rock-cut sculptures and temples dating back to 6th and 7th century AD. Spend the entire day exploring the island and caves. Return to the Gateway of India in the evening and enjoy dinner at Trishna, a famous seafood restaurant that has been around for over 50 years.

  3. Day 3: Dharavi Slum Tour and Bollywood
    30 minutes (12 km) from Colaba Causeway

    Start the day with a walking tour of Dharavi, one of the largest slums in Asia and home to a variety of small-scale industries. Gain insight into the local culture and daily life of the residents. In the afternoon, visit the Film City, a complex of film studios in Goregaon where many Bollywood movies and television shows are made. Take a tour and learn about the behind-the-scenes of the Indian film industry. In the evening, watch a Bollywood movie at the iconic Regal Cinema in Colaba.

  4. Day 4: Sanjay Gandhi National Park
    1-hour drive (30 km) from Colaba Causeway

    Spend the day at Sanjay Gandhi National Park and enjoy the lush greenery, waterfalls, and wildlife. Visit the Kanheri Caves, which are Buddhist rock-cut caves dating back to 1st century BC. Go for a trekking or cycling trail, or take a boat ride at the Tulsi Lake. In the evening, have dinner at one of the many restaurants in Powai, a suburb that is home to many global and local eateries.

You should consider visiting the Haji Ali Dargah, an iconic mosque that is situated on an island accessible via a narrow pathway during low tide. For day trips, you can visit the nearby Elephanta Islands or take a ferry to Alibaug, a beach town that is known for its fresh seafood and water sports. To maximize your fun, try street food like vada pav or pav bhaji, or take a Bollywood dance class in the city.
