Two-Day Itinerary for Ujjain in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

    Begin your day with a visit to the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The morning aarti is a must-see, where you can witness the holy rituals being performed. After that, head to the nearby Ram Ghat for a boat ride on the Shipra River. In the afternoon, visit the Kaliadeh Palace, located on an island in the Shipra River. This beautiful palace was built during the reign of the Scindias and offers an amazing view of the river. In the evening, visit the Kal Bhairav Temple, dedicated to Lord Bhairav, a fierce form of Lord Shiva.

  2. Day 2: Vedh Shala Observatory and Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir
    15 minutes (2.7 miles) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Start your day with a visit to the Vedh Shala Observatory, one of the oldest observatories in India. The observatory was built in the 17th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II and still operates today. In the afternoon, visit the Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir, one of the most popular temples in Ujjain. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is famous for its huge idol of the deity. In the evening, head to the Kothi Palace, a beautiful palace built during the Holkar era. The palace now houses the Madhya Pradesh State Museum, which showcases the history and culture of the state.

Recommendations

If you have time, visit the Sandipani Ashram, located on the outskirts of Ujjain. This ashram is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna and Sudama studied under Guru Sandipani. You can also take a day trip to Mandu, a historic city located about 100 km from Ujjain. The city is famous for its monuments and palaces, including the Jahaz Mahal and the Hindola Mahal. Don't forget to try the local street food in Ujjain, especially the chaats and the malpua.
