3-Day Adventure Itinerary for Wayanadu, Kerala

  1. Day 1: Chembra Peak
    45 minutes (16.7 km) from Kalpetta

    Morning: Start early to embark on a trek up to the heart-shaped lake at the top of Chembra Peak - the highest peak in Wayanadu. The 4 km trek takes around 3-4 hours and is a challenging climb, but the views from the top are worth it.
    Afternoon: Take a break and have a picnic by the side of the lake. The crystal-clear water is perfect for swimming.
    Evening: Head down before it gets dark and visit Pookode Lake - a serene freshwater lake surrounded by forests and hills. You can go for a boat ride, feed the fish, or just enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

  2. Day 2: Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
    1 hour 10 minutes (38.6 km) from Kalpetta

    Morning: Start your day with an early morning safari at Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, and deer. You will need to book your safari in advance.
    Afternoon: After your safari, take a short drive to Soochipara Falls - a three-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. You can swim in the pools at the bottom or hike up to the top of the falls for an amazing view.
    Evening: Head back to Kalpetta and explore the local markets. You can buy local spices, coffee, and handicrafts at bargain prices.

  3. Day 3: Edakkal Caves
    50 minutes (23.1 km) from Kalpetta

    Morning: Visit the Edakkal Caves - a series of natural caves that contain ancient petroglyphs dating back to the Neolithic era. The caves are located on top of a hill and require a short trek up a steep path to reach.
    Afternoon: After lunch, head to Banasura Sagar Dam - the largest earthen dam in India and surrounded by beautiful mountains and forests. You can go for a boat ride, zip-lining, or trekking in the area.
    Evening: End your trip with a visit to the Wayanad Heritage Museum - a showcase of the history, culture, and traditions of Wayanadu. The museum has a collection of artifacts, photographs, and paintings that give you a glimpse into the past.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary - home to herds of wild elephants and other wildlife. You can also take a day trip to the nearby town of Vythiri, which is famous for its tree houses and coffee plantations. To maximize your fun, try the local cuisine - especially the appam and stew, puttu and kadala curry, and biryani.
