2-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Chennai in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Kapaleeswarar Temple
    10 minutes (2.8 km) from Adyar

    In the morning, visit the Kapaleeswarar Temple, a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Admire the stunning Dravidian architecture and the intricately carved gopuram (gateway tower). Afterward, enjoy some traditional South Indian breakfast at nearby restaurants like Murugan Idli Shop or Sangeetha. In the afternoon, explore the nearby streets of Mylapore, full of shops selling silk sarees, handicrafts, and jewelry. In the evening, head to the Marina Beach, the longest urban beach in India, to watch the sunset and indulge in some local snacks like sundal and bhajji.

  2. Day 2: Mahabalipuram
    1 hour 30 minutes (60 km) from Adyar

    On the second day, take a day trip to Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ancient rock-cut temples and sculptures. Start your day by visiting the Shore Temple, one of the oldest temples in South India, and then head to the Five Rathas, a set of monolithic rock-cut temples shaped like chariots. Enjoy a traditional South Indian thali for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Mahabalipuram. Spend the rest of your afternoon exploring the various caves and rock-cut sculptures, such as Arjuna's Penance, Krishna's Butterball, and the Tiger Cave. Head back to Chennai in the evening.
