4-Day Itinerary for Pondicherry in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Promenade Beach
    10 minutes (2.3 km) from Pondicherry Railway Station

    In the morning, stroll along the 1.2 km long Promenade Beach, enjoying the sea breeze and the view of the Bay of Bengal. Head to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in the afternoon, a spiritual community founded in the early 20th century. In the evening, visit the French Quarter, admiring the colorful colonial buildings and sampling some of the local French cuisine.

  2. Day 2: Auroville
    25 minutes (11 km) from Promenade Beach

    Set out early to visit Auroville, an experimental township founded in 1968. Spend the morning exploring the Matrimandir, a golden dome meditation center, and the surrounding gardens. Head to the Puducherry Museum in the afternoon, which houses a collection of Roman and French artifacts. Finish the day by taking a boat ride in Chunnambar backwaters.

  3. Day 3: Gingee Fort
    1 hour 30 minutes (70 km) from Auroville

    Today, venture out of Pondicherry to visit Gingee Fort, a 17th-century stronghold atop three hills. Take a guided trek up to the fort, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Afternoon return to Pondicherry and visit the Botanical Garden. In the evening, attend a cultural program at the Kala Kendra.

  4. Day 4: Paradise Beach
    20 minutes (8 km) from Botanical Garden

    Start the day by visiting the Arikamedu Archaeological Site, an ancient port that dates back to the 1st century BC. Spend the afternoon lounging on Paradise Beach, a secluded stretch of sand accessible only by boat. End the day with a visit to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, a grand church built in the 1700s.

Consider visiting the Ousteri Lake, which offers birdwatching and boating opportunities. You can also take a day trip to the ancient temple town of Kanchipuram or the French colonial town of Mahabalipuram.
