Starting early, head out to Pisac where the Pisac Ruins await you. It is said that Pisac had a strategic military position, guarding the entrance to the valley and controlling the route to the jungle. After exploring the ruins, make your way to Pisac Market which is open daily, but on Sundays it’s especially grand. Get your fill of local textiles, pottery, and jewelry before heading to Ollantaytambo.
Spending the afternoon in Ollantaytambo, walk through the main square, and then explore the ruins which are built on top of terraces. This site is quite impressive because of its large monolithic rocks that were used in construction. Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti who conquered the region, built the town, and a ceremonial center.
Start your day early to catch the train from Ollantaytambo Station to Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. Take a quick look around before heading to the bus station to head up to the ruins. Be prepared for the wonder that is Machu Picchu which will take your breath away. After spending your morning and early afternoon exploring the ruins, head back down to Aguas Calientes for lunch and then take the train back to Ollantaytambo.
Make sure to pack some comfortable walking shoes since you will be exploring ruins and walking for long periods of time. If you have more than 2 days, consider adding trips to Cusco and the Sacred Valley. If you have less time, you can cut your visit to Pisac and spend more time exploring Ollantaytambo or revisit Machu Picchu for an additional day. Keep in mind that you need to book your tickets in advance for train and entrance to Machu Picchu. Lastly, prepare for altitude sickness by drinking coca tea, taking medication or by acclimatizing a few days before the trip.
