Three-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary in Ujjain (August 2023)

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    10 minutes (1.5 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

    Start your day with a visit to the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered as one of the most powerful Shiva temples in the country. Take a dip in the holy Kshipra River before entering the temple. Afternoon, head to the Vedh Shala Observatory, which is one of the oldest observatories in the country. End your day with a visit to the Harsiddhi Temple, one of the most revered temples in Ujjain.

  2. Day 2: Kal Bhairav Temple, Sandipani Ashram, and Bhartrihari Caves
    20 minutes (5 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Today, start your morning by seeking blessings at the Kal Bhairav Temple which is dedicated to Lord Bhairava, a fierce form of Lord Shiva. After that, head to the Sandipani Ashram, where Lord Krishna and Sudama were educated by Guru Sandipani. The ashram also has a museum that showcases the ancient Gurukul system of education. Later, visit the Bhartrihari Caves, a place where the great scholar, Bhartrihari, meditated. It is also a beautiful spot for nature lovers to enjoy the scenic beauty of the surroundings.

  3. Day 3: Kaliadeh Palace and Mangalnath Temple
    15 minutes (6 km) from Bhartrihari Caves

    Today, visit the Kaliadeh Palace, a beautiful palace located on the banks of the Shipra River. The palace is surrounded by lush gardens and is believed to have been the summer retreat of the Scindia rulers. Afternoon, head to the Mangalnath Temple, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated at the confluence of the Shipra and Narmada rivers. End your day with a visit to the Chintaman Ganesh Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is believed to be the spot where Lord Rama rested during his journey to Lanka.

Recommendations

While in Ujjain, you may also consider visiting the Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir, the Kalideh Sanctuary, and the Gadkalika Temple. You can also take a day trip to the nearby city of Indore to visit the Lal Bagh Palace and the Kanch Mandir. To maximize your fun, try some local delicacies like poha, jalebi, and chaat, and shop for souvenirs at the local markets like Sarafa Bazaar and Freeganj Market.
