Jammu and Kashmir: A Family Friendly 4-Day Itinerary in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Srinagar
    31 minutes (11.9 km) from Srinagar International Airport

    Morning: Visit the Mughal Gardens, a group of gardens built by the Mughal Emperors in the 16th century. The gardens feature terraced lawns, fountains and flowerbeds. Next, head to the Shankaracharya Hill to visit the Shankaracharya Temple, a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The hill offers a panoramic view of the city.

    Afternoon: Take a shikara ride on the Dal Lake, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Srinagar. You can visit the floating markets and also see the famous houseboats. After the ride, visit the Hazratbal Shrine, the holiest Muslim shrine in Kashmir.

    Evening: Explore the local markets in Srinagar, which offer a variety of handicrafts, including Pashmina shawls, embroidered fabrics and papier-mâché products.

  2. Day 2: Gulmarg

    Morning: Drive to Gulmarg, a popular skiing destination in winter and a scenic hill station in summer. Take the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, to reach the top of the Apharwat Peak.

    Afternoon: Enjoy a picnic lunch in the beautiful meadows of Gulmarg, while admiring the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

    Evening: Explore the local markets of Gulmarg, which offer a variety of woolen clothes, handicrafts and souvenirs.

  3. Day 3: Pahalgam
    3 hours 10 minutes (92.5 km) from Gulmarg

    Morning: Drive to Pahalgam, a popular hill station known for its scenic beauty and adventure activities. Visit the Betaab Valley, named after the Bollywood movie "Betaab," which was shot here. The valley offers breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains, lush greenery and the Lidder River.

    Afternoon: Go for a horse ride or a nature walk in the pine forests of Pahalgam. Visit the Aru Valley, a picturesque valley with a small stream flowing through it.

    Evening: Relax by the river and enjoy the serene surroundings of Pahalgam.

  4. Day 4: Sonamarg
    3 hours 15 minutes (88.1 km) from Pahalgam

    Morning: Drive to Sonamarg, a beautiful valley nestled in the Himalayas. Take a pony ride to the Thajiwas Glacier, a popular tourist spot. The glacier offers stunning views of the snowcapped mountains and the surrounding meadows.

    Afternoon: Visit the Zoji La Pass, a high mountain pass in the Himalayas. The pass offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.

    Evening: Explore the local markets of Sonamarg, which offer a variety of handicrafts, including woolen clothes, shawls, carpets and jewelry made of semi-precious stones.

Recommendations

Consider taking a day trip to the Dachigam National Park, a wildlife sanctuary known for its population of Hangul, the Kashmiri stag. You can also visit the Martand Sun Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to the Sun God. To maximize your fun, try the local delicacies, like Wazwan, a traditional Kashmiri feast, and Kahwa, a local tea made with saffron and spices.
