Adventure in Sri Lanka - 6 Day Itinerary in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Sigiriya Rock Fortress
    2 hours 11 minutes (55 miles) from Bandaranaike International Airport

    Start the day early to beat the crowds and climb the 1200 steps to the top of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Marvel at the breathtaking views of the surrounding jungle and the ancient ruins of the palace at the summit. After lunch, visit the nearby Pidurangala Rock to get a different perspective of Sigiriya. In the evening, take a jeep safari at Minneriya National Park to see elephants, leopards and other wildlife.

  2. Day 2: Adams Peak
    3 hours 53 minutes (98 miles) from Sigiriya Rock Fortress

    Take an early morning hike to the top of Adams Peak, also known as Sri Pada, to watch the sunrise and see the sacred footprint believed to be that of Buddha. On the way back, visit the nearby tea plantations and learn about the process of tea making. In the evening, explore the colonial architecture and local markets in the city of Kandy.

  3. Day 3: Horton Plains National Park
    2 hours 17 minutes (30 miles) from Kandy

    Embark on a trek through the Horton Plains National Park early in the morning to witness the stunning scenery of the grasslands, forests, and waterfalls. Don't miss the World's End viewpoint, which offers breathtaking views of the southern plains. After the trek, visit the nearby Udawalawe National Park and go on a jeep safari to spot elephants, crocodiles, and many other wild animals.

  4. Day 4: Ella Rock
    1 hour 55 minutes (43 miles) from Horton Plains National Park

    Start the day with a scenic train ride from Ella to Demodara. After reaching Demodara, hike to the top of Ella Rock and be rewarded with stunning views of the mountains, waterfalls and tea plantations. In the afternoon, visit the Nine Arch Bridge, an iconic colonial railway viaduct built in the early 20th century.

  5. Day 5: Mirissa Whale Watching
    2 hours 50 minutes (80 miles) from Ella Rock

    Head to the southern coast to witness the magnificent marine life of Sri Lanka. Take a whale watching tour in Mirissa and spot blue whales, orcas and dolphins. Relax at the nearby Unawatuna Beach in the afternoon and enjoy the sun and the sea. In the evening, explore the Dutch Fort in Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved examples of colonial architecture in Asia.

  6. Day 6: Sinharaja Forest Reserve
    2 hours 21 minutes (56 miles) from Mirissa Whale Watching

    End the trip with a trek through the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last remaining rainforests in Sri Lanka. Explore the lush greenery and diverse wildlife, including endemic birds, snakes, and amphibians. After the trek, visit the Handunugoda Tea Estate to learn about the production of white tea, known as the "Champagne of Teas".

Recommendations

Consider visiting the Yala National Park, the largest national park in Sri Lanka, for a safari to see leopards, elephants, and other wildlife. Another option is to take a day trip to the ancient city of Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its well-preserved ruins of the ancient Sinhalese civilization. Don't forget to try the local food and try out some of the adventure activities such as white water rafting and zip-lining to maximize your fun.
