3-Day City Experiences Itinerary for Ujjain in September 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    15 minutes (2.5 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

    The Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the most famous and important temples in Ujjain, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The temple opens early in the morning, and you can witness the 'Bhasma Aarti' which is a special and rare ritual here. Afterward, take a walk around the temple complex to see the intricate carvings and paintings. In the afternoon, visit the Vedh Shala Observatory, which is the fifth-oldest observatory in the world, built in the 18th century. Here, you can see the astronomical instruments used by ancient Indian astronomers, including the Samrat Yantra, which is the largest sundial in the world. In the evening, head to the Kaliadeh Palace, situated on the banks of the Shipra river. Enjoy the sunset here, and learn about the palace's history and architecture.

This temple is known for its large idol of Lord Ganesha, which is believed to be one of the eight Swayambhu (self-manifested) idols of Lord Ganesha. In the evening, you can explore the local markets and try some famous Ujjaini snacks like poha and jalebi.

If you have some more time, you can visit the Kshipra river for a boat ride or visit the nearby temple town of Omkareshwar.
