Exploring Kashi Varanasi Banaras in July 2023: A City Experience

  1. Day 1: Kashi Vishwanath Temple
    10 minutes (3.0 km) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    In the morning, visit the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which is one of the most important Hindu temples. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. In the afternoon, head to Manikarnika Ghat to witness the cremation rituals that take place there. The evening can be spent taking a boat ride on the Ganges River and attending the Ganga Aarti, a Hindu ceremony that takes place every evening at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    30 minutes (10 km) from the city centre

    Spend the morning exploring Sarnath, the place where Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The site includes several stupas, monasteries and museums that showcase the history and evolution of Buddhism. In the afternoon, visit the Banaras Hindu University, one of the largest residential universities in Asia. The university has a beautiful campus and several museums worth exploring. In the evening, head to the bustling Godowlia Market to shop for souvenirs and try some local street food.

  3. Day 3: Ramnagar Fort and Museum
    20 minutes (6.0 km) from the city centre

    Start the day by visiting the Ramnagar Fort and Museum, which is located on the opposite bank of the Ganges. The fort has a beautiful architecture and houses a museum that showcases the history and culture of the region. In the afternoon, visit the Alamgir Mosque, which is also known as Beni Madhav Ka Darera. The mosque is located on the Panchganga Ghat and has a unique blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture. In the evening, head to the Assi Ghat to witness the Ganga Aarti and enjoy some snacks at the Chai Stall.

Recommendations

If you have an extra day, you can visit the nearby Chunar Fort, which is located 40 km from Varanasi. The fort has a rich history and offers a beautiful view of the Ganges. You can also take a day trip to the nearby village of Chiraigaon and explore the rural life of the region. To maximize your fun, try to attend a classical music concert or dance performance at the Sankat Mochan Temple or the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum.
