Todai-ji Temple is one of the most famous and historically significant temples in Japan. It houses the world's largest bronze Buddha statue and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and smaller shrines. Be sure to visit the Nandaimon Gate, a national treasure and the entrance to the temple.
Isuien Garden is a traditional Japanese garden with a pond, waterfalls and stone bridges. It features two sections: a front garden with a tea house and a back garden that dates back to the 17th century. Visitors can enjoy a cup of matcha tea and a traditional Japanese sweet while taking in the scenery.
Nakatanidou is a small shop that specializes in mochi (rice cake) made on the spot. Watch as the staff pound the rice with wooden mallets to make the mochi, which is then filled with sweet red bean paste. The mochi is soft and chewy, and the experience is both entertaining and delicious.
Kofuku-ji Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features two pagodas, a five-story and a three-story, that are symbols of Nara. The temple also has a museum with artifacts and exhibits related to Buddhism and the history of the temple.
Higashimuki is a covered shopping arcade with over 100 shops that sell souvenirs, clothing, and local specialties. This is the perfect place to pick up gifts for friends and family back home, or some souvenirs to remember your trip. Don't forget to try the local delicacy, kakinoha-zushi (boxed sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves).
If you have more time, consider visiting Kasuga Taisha, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, or taking a hike up Wakakusa-yama to see a panoramic view of Nara city. If you have less time, skip Isuien Garden or Higashimuki and spend more time at Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji temples.
