Start the day with a visit to the Gir National Park, which is home to the Asiatic lions and other wildlife species. You can book a jeep or bus safari through the park to see the animals in their natural habitat. The safari allows you to see various wildlife like sambar deer, chital, nilgai, chinkara, and of course, the lions. Keep your camera ready to capture the mesmerizing and unique experience.
Next up, visit the Upperkot Fort in Junagadh, which is located in the city's heart. The fort is a must-visit for history buffs and offers a brilliant view of the city. Inside, you'll find several architectural gems, including step wells, palaces, and temples, all dating back to the pre-Mughal era.
On day 2, head to Nalsarovar Lake, which is a natural backwater lake and bird sanctuary. Rent a boat and make your way into the lake to witness the beautiful sight of migratory birds flying overhead and the tranquil sight of a serene lake. The lake is open all year round except during monsoon, and it's better to visit the lake in the morning to avoid the scorching sun.
Next up, head to the Uparkot Fort, which is one of the oldest forts in India. The fort played a significant role in the history of Junagadh and dates back to the 3rd century BCE. Apart from the fort, you can visit the Buddhist caves, which are a testament to Buddhism's influence in the region.
If you have more time, you can visit other famous places like the Mahabat Maqbara, Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden, and the Junagadh Museum. If you have less time, you can skip Uparkot Fort and spend more time at Gir National Park or Nalsarovar Lake. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes and carry insect repellents, sunscreen, and a hat for the outdoor excursions.
